The newly established Research Group Methods for Big Data at the Scientific Computing Center welcomes applications for a postdoctoral research fellow (f/m/d)

In this project you will:

  • develop novel statistical methods that leverage the potential of Bayesian statistics and machine learning
  • investigate theoretical properties of the developed methods

Personal qualification

Job requirements:

  • Excellent university degree (master) and completed PhD in statistics mathematics, data science, or statistics-oriented computer science
  • Strong expertise in the theoretical and computational aspects of Bayesian statistics
  • Profound expertise in at least one of the following areas (in addition to Bayesian statistics): High-dimensional statistics, Distributional and advanced regression, Survival analysis, Variational inference, Copula modelling
  • Track record and excellent publications in at least one of the main research areas above
  • Strong computational, mathematical skills
  • Solid programming skills in any scientific programming language, e.g. Python, R
  • High proficiency in English, both written and spoken for your scientific publications and presentations

The department Data Analytics, Access and Applications (D3A) is responsible for federated access methods for distributed storage and cloud services, the development and application of scalable tools for Data Analytics and Machine Learning, joint research and development with domain scientists, contributions to the European Open Science Cloud and the integration of research communities in the context of several EU projects.

The SCC operates helpdesk systems as part of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) and the World-wide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG). Various scientific communities with different requirements use the helpdesk systems internationally. For the production operation of these services, we are looking for a system administrator for our helpdesk team.

The tasks include:

  • Operations of helpdesk systems on Linux platforms
  • Design and implementation of configuration management for the efficient and secure maintenance of instances
  • Support of researchers and users of the helpdesk systems.

Personal qualification

Job requirements:

  • Diploma (University)/Master with a major in computer science, natural science, software engineering or comparable
  • Deep knowledge in system administration of Linux environments
  • Knowledge of docker, CI/CD tools, DevOps pipelines, web servers

As part of the DFG-funded project "Infrastructure for data-based learning in environmental science (ISABEL)", we are looking for reinforcement for the further development of a Virtual Research Environment for finding, processing and sharing hydrologically relevant data. The goal of this position is to prepare the web portal, and in particular the user interface, for productive operation.

The tasks include:

  • Enhancement and adaption of the front end to new geodata and tools
  • Integration of geo tools via the OGC API processes
  • Documentation and publication of project results.

Personal qualification

Job requirements:

  • Master / Diploma (University) with a major in geoinformatics, computer science, software engineering or comparable
  • Strong experience in web development (ideally JavaScript, CSS, django web framework)
  • Experience with tools and methods for software testing
  • Strong interest in applications in the climate and environment research area
  • Proven experience in documentation, teamwork, and written and spoken English skills

The Scientific Computing Center (SCC) is the information technology center of KIT.

The Scientific Computing and Simulation Department (SCS) operates large-scale facilities for scientific High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Data-Intensive Sciences, including the "High Performance Computer Karlsruhe" (HoreKa), one of the fastest and most energy-efficient computers in Europe. In November 2020, the SCC was selected as a center for National High-Performance Computing (NHR) after a nationwide application process.

To strengthen our software team, we are looking for a Scientific Software Consultant (f/m/d) as soon as possible.

  • You provide optimized versions of scientific and technical applications and libraries to the users on our High-Performance Computers within the National High Performance Computing (NHR@KIT) and the Baden-Württemberg High-Performance Computing (bwHPC) projects, and advise researchers on their efficient use.
  • You will manage license quotas of commercial, scientific software packages, further develop license manager processes, ensure that usage is in line with requirements and take care of further licensing.
  • You ensure that problems are solved quickly and competently in close coordination with users and other experts.
  • As part of the so-called "Future Technologies Partition", you install and evaluate the software packages you support on new types of architectures such as ARM processors or AMD GPUs.
  • You independently prepare teaching materials and documentation for the software packages you support and participate in workshops and training courses.
  • You support the review process for scientific computing time allotments on the HPC systems and contribute to the further development of processes and services for user support.

Personal qualification

Job requirements:

  • You have a university degree (Masterlevel) in the Natural Sciences, Engineering, the Computational Sciences, Computer Science or Mathematics.
  • You have profound experience in using and installing at least two common, relevant software packages from various scientific disciplines (e.g. Matlab, Mathematica, R, ANSYS, Abaqus, Comsol, StarCCM+, Tecplot, VASP, Turbomole, GROMACS, or OpenFOAM) on parallel high-performance computers.
  • Also desirable is experience using software for new scientific methods (such as artificial intelligence) or in the area of advanced software development methods (such as continuous integration, research software engineering).
  • You have basic knowledge of Linux operating systems and ideally software license managers. Existing hands-on experience with Linux server system administration incl. shell scripting of workflows, and version management, and compilers is desired.
  • You have basic knowledge and experience with programming languages and advanced paradigms.
  • You bring good English and basic German language skills.
  • Overall, you convince with a high degree of initiative, result orientation and teamwork.

Das Scientific Computing Center ist das Informationstechnologie-Zentrum des KIT. 

Die Abteilung IT-Sicherheit, Client- und Servicemanagement (ICSM) betreibt die Arbeitsplatzendgeräte für die Verwaltungseinrichtungen des KIT und stellt einen sicheren und störungsarmen Betrieb sicher.

Zu Ihren Tätigkeiten gehören:

  • die selbständige Installation und die Gewährleistung des Betriebs der IT-Endgeräte,
  • die Nutzung und Administration der etablierten technischen Komponenten für eine weitestgehende Automation,
  • und die Erstellung von Softwarepaketen zur Verteilung auf den IT-Arbeitsplatzsystemen.

Darüber hinaus die Implementierung und Weiterentwicklung des Mobile Device Management (MDM) auf Basis von Microsoft Intune.

Das MDM umfasst die Inventarisierung und zentrale Verwaltung von Mobilgeräten, die innerhalb des KIT, sowie die Verteilung von Software, den Schutz der darauf abgelegten Daten sowie die drahtlose Netzanbindung mobiler Endgeräte.

Personal qualification

Sie bringen mit:
